Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is the most inventive and entertaining American horror film since Devil's Rejects—maybe even since the first Scream. Like Scream, Behind the Mask exposes the inner workings and conventions of the horror genre, but then scares the audience anyway—Glosserman is able to make fun of slasher clichés while proving that those same clichés can be undeniably effective. He also provides dozens of witty references to other horror movies, from Halloween to The Shining, and the enthusiasm with which he tips his hat to his predecessors is infectious. Yet this is much more than an exercise in film geekdom; while one's appreciation of Behind the Mask will be significantly enhanced by a comprehensive knowledge of horror film history, the in-jokes never get in the way of the story, nor are they an essential component of it. For when all is said and done, Behind the Mask is as frightening as it is hilarious—it starts off as a parody but ends up delivering the slasher movie goods like a Friday the 13th sequel with brains.
The wait is over. Endlessly imaginative, rigorously crafted, and extremely frightening, Behind the Mask is as good as horror gets.
Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is, in its own way, a masterpiece. There’s no two ways to say it. This is the best horror movie to come by in years and the best slasher movie since Craven made Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984. If you’re any kind of a fan you should already be out the door running to the nearest theatre showing this thing.
