Description
Chinese-Canadian turntablist Kid Koala was born Eric San in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1975.
Classically trained on the piano, San instead put his fingers to work on a pair of Technics 1200s
starting in the late '80s. He was a college pub DJ and bedroom turntable manipulator for nearly a
decade before landing a recording deal with U.K. experimental hip-hop duo Coldcut's Ninja Tune
imprint in 1997.
Shortly after signing the enigmatic San, Ninja Tune released excerpts of San's demo-mixtape
'Scratchcratchratchatch' as the 10" 'Scratchhappyland' in 1997. Reknowned for weaving humorous
elements into his unique live and recorded sets, his style and techniques spedily built a fanbase
while touring with the Ninja crew. With a return to his home turf, San hit the studio, and
dropped the light hearted 2000 full-length release 'Carpal Tunnel Syndrome' the follow-up to
which; 'Some of My Best Friends Are DJ's' appeared in 2003. Mr Koala's graphic novel and bonus
disc 'Nufonia Must Fall' also hit the shelves of music and bookstores in 2003, inspiring the
Nufonia Must Fall Book Tour.
Not to be understated, Kid Koala is a true gem in in a sea of turntable monotony.
